Can I Run Rust?
To meet the Rust system requirements, you will need an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 GPU, an Intel Core i7-3770 CPU, 10GB of RAM, and 35GB of HDD or SSD space.
The Rust requirements for PC are set pretty low with a sensible minimum. Many players experience some frame rate issues - but they can mostly be fixed in the Rust game settings menu.
According to the developer, the Rust minimum requirements for 2025 only need an AMD 500 series graphics card or better, an AMD FX 9590 processor, and 10GB of RAM. This is higher than when the game first launched in 2018, but not out of reach for older laptops and PCs.
If, however, you want to meet the Rust recommended specs, you will need an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU, an Intel Core i7-4790K CPU, and 16GB of RAM, which is a significant leap over the minimum specs.
Rust size - How big is Rust?
The current Rust download size on PC requires 35GB of HDD or SSD space. This is only slightly bigger than the 20GB need the game originally required, and it's possible that the size will increase in the years to come.
We recommend installing the game on an SSD to ensure the best gameplay performance. So, if you need more space or want to make an upgrade, check the PCGamesN buyers guide for the best SSD for gaming or just check the latest, best prices for SSDs.
Rust Performance Guide
The game Rust can get pretty rough on your PC, especially in high population multiplayer servers. Thankfully Rust requirements have a huge range of graphics options available, both in the main game settings and by using console commands.
- You can keep track of your FPS by pressing F1 to bring up the console screen and typing “perf 1”. This will put an FPS counter on the bottom left part of your screen during play.
- To improve performance, turn off HDR, sun shafts, depth of field and color grading. You can also turn down the overall graphics quality, water quality, number of shadows and draw distance.
- In the performance tab you can make additional improvements to help hit the Rust specs. For example, by lowering the maximum number of “gibs” (the biggest impact of this is in reducing the number of broken pieces when a wall or other constructed object is destroyed), and lowering the quality of particles, objects, trees, terrain, grass and decor.
- If this still hasn’t done the trick, you can make additional changes via the in-game console. Use the commands “find animation”, “find graphics”, “find terrain” and “find audio” to see a whole host of additional options that can be adjusted. Once your changes are made, enter the command “writecfg” to apply and save your tweaks.
Rust Steam
You will need to play Rust on Steam - it is only available via that platform. There is a vague announcement of a Rust PS4 release, but nothing known yet. If you're looking for deals the game is not available on GMG - Rust G2A is your best bet if you're looking for the Steam codes cheap. There are loads of third parties who sell Rust servers - we recommend GTX Gaming. Fun fact - the Rust player count recently broke a new record, hitting 134,483 concurrent players.
