Can I Run GTA 5?

To run the GTA 5 requirements for PC, you will need an NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT graphics card, an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and 110GB of HD space. You will also need Windows 10 or higher.

The GTA 5 PC requirements are fairly low when you compare it to many other popular games, but, given the age of the game, this isn't too surprising. Just about any modern laptop or PC should have no difficulty playing Grand Theft Auto 5, even on the higher settings.

The GTA 5 minimum requirements only require an AMD HD 4870 GPU, an Intel AMD Phenom 9850 processor, amd 4GB of RAM. The game runs well on processors that are more than 15 years old, so even modern budget laptops should be able to run GTA 5 without issue.

If you want to meet the GTA 5 recommended specs, you will need an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 or an AMD Radeon HD 7870 graphics card alongside an Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD X8 FX-8350 processor, and 8GB of RAM. This level of hardware offers a much smoother and more crisp experience when playing the game.

However, as GTA 5 can be quite an intense experience, particularly in the GTA 5 Online mode, you might want to meet the GTA 5 Ultra specs which we've assembled from thousands of hardware tests. With an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 GPU, an Intel Core i5-4590 CPU, and 16GB of RAM, you should achieve a consistent 60FPS experience on the highest settings.

Despite the game's relative age, you will need a relatively modern OS system to run GTA V. Rockstar have stated that Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 operating systems are no longer supported. If you previously played GTA 5 on one of these OS systems, you will need to upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11 to play the game.

GTA 5 size - How big is GTA V?

You'll need 110GB of storage space free for the initial GTA 5 download size. On consoles, you'll only need about 87GB of HD space, but future GTA Online updates could increase the game's overall size requirements.

We recommend installing the game on an SSD over a HDD. Our tests have shown that an SSD practically eliminates texture pop-in times, and massively reduces loading times when you change locations or would ordinarily encounter a loading screen.

So, if you need more space or want to make an upgrade, check the PCGamesN buyers guide for the best SSD for gaming or just check the latest, best prices for SSDs.

Considering the 110GB download size, it's not too surprising that the GTA 5 map size is also pretty huge. By most estimates, the GTA 5 map size is 75km2.

GTA 5 settings

GTA 5 may be relatively old, debuting on the PC back in 2015, but it's still as popular as the day it launched. At the time of its release, high-end rigs struggled to run the game at High and Ultra settings, but recent advancements in CPUs and GPUs have made running GTA 5 much easier.

The open-world of GTA 5 is massive, which can lead to long load times. To combat this, we recommend installing GTA 5 on an SSD, which will drastically reduce time spent staring at loading screens.

If you're struggling to maintain a stable or high frame rate, try switching the anti-aliasing option from MSAA to FXAA or just turn off the setting completely. Our extensive tests with MSAA, particularly on 4X and 8X settings have shown severe FPS drops as high as 50% compared to using FXAA. Post-FX settings like bloom, HDR lighting, and heat shimmer also have a big impact on performance. Keeping these settings in particular a step or two below their recommended settings can help with FPS gains.

Texture quality has a small impact on performance, so if you want to keep the game looking decent on a lower-end system, you should be able to keep the texture quality relatively high. One particular setting you don't want to turn down is the Water quality; you won't see much in FPS gains if you set the Water quality to Normal over Very High, and the massive drop in visuals isn't worth it.
